[texts, then phone log] Steve and Tony
After Steve hears a report about another Stark Industries explosion, he checks in with Tony, even though they haven't spoken since their fight.
Steve:
Are you okay?
Tony:
Fine. I'd tell you otherwise.
Steve:
I just wanted to check.
Tony:
Still fine.
Steve:
Stop being an asshole. You'd to the same if it were me, and you know it.
Tony:
Excuse me? You asked a question, I answered it.
Steve:
It was the second one I was referring to, actually.
But whatever. I'm glad you're fine. Sorry I bothered you, it won't happen again.
Tony:
Don't
Okay fine.
Steve:
Don't what?
Tony:
Do you really want to do this through text?
Steve:
I don't know what 'this' is, but, no, probably not.
Hang on.
(Phone call)
Steve: Hey.
Tony: Hi.
Steve: (awkward pause, then) Don't what?
Tony: Don't make this a bigger thing than it needs to be.
Steve: We haven't been talking to each other. It's already a 'big thing'.
Tony: Well who's choice was that?
Steve: I was under the impression that not talking took two people.
Tony: I'm sorry, was this not supposed to be silent treatment?
Steve: ...No? I mean...I've been really upset, but I thought you didn't want to talk to me.
Tony: Because I'd be replying if I didn't want to talk to you?
Steve: Yeah, because you never try and get the last word in. (Sighs.) I don't know, Tony. I thought you didn't want to talk to me. You had plenty of reason not to, and it's not like you were saying anything either.
Tony: It's not like I'm going to just stop, even if you don't like it. I have a job to do.
Steve: Did I ever ask you to? I said a lot of things, but I'm pretty damn sure that wasn't one of them.
Tony: So you're fine with everything.
Steve: I'm not happy about it, but I understand why you're doing it. As much as I can, considering you won't tell me anything, anyway. I know you wouldn't do something like this just because you're bored. I...I know I was horrible, how I acted, but I was...shocked, and scared. And then upset, because it's not like you helped at all, and then it just... (Trails off, then sighs)
I'm still upset. But what I don't like is that you're doing it alone, and that I didn't know, or even notice that anything was wrong. I should have noticed.
Tony: (aggravated sigh) I can't tell you anything. Or anyone else. Literally can't. And you shouldn't have to be involved, which is why I've been trying so hard to keep you out of it.
Steve: ...Okay, well, can you tell me why you can't tell me? Even vaguely? Because before, you were just saying it was none of my business, which...is bullshit, to be frank.
Tony: I made a promise.
Steve: (aggravated sigh) Okay. I..don't like it, but I guess I can understand that. (Pause.) Why couldn't you just say that? Why did you have to be such a jerk to me when I was obviously freaked out?
Tony: Because -- (long pause and then his voice is noticeably calmer) Because I'd just gotten into an unexpected fire fight and you showed up out of nowhere and started yelling at me. I wasn't exactly thinking at my best.
Steve: (a long pause, then his voice quiet, and a little guilty) ...Oh. I-I hadn't thought of that. I just walked in, and there were bullet holes, and the suit...
(Another pause) I shouldn't have I left you alone after that. I just, I'd never been in a fight like that before. It shook me up, and...honestly? I was afraid that one of us would say something we couldn't come back from. But it was...selfish. I should have realized that, even if it scared the hell out of me, you were the one it actually happened to.
Tony: I'm fine, honestly. (Slight amusement starting to creep in) It turns out that being able to deflect bullets can do wonders for issues over guns.
Steve: (Laughs) That's good, at least.
(Pause, then quiet) I miss you. I'm still...upset, I guess is the best word. At both of us. But I miss you.
Tony: Well. When you're ready to come back, do that.
Steve: Okay. Are you busy this weekend? I can come up after classes
on Friday.
Tony: I can make time.
Steve: Okay. Thanks.
