Hello, I am Carlos Solano-Avila. I am a student here, and will be at least through the summer. I am also a scientist. I gained the ability to view the world at the atomic level last year, though my interest in science preceded this. I look forward to speaking with all of you.

Do you like any particular branch of science or all science? I have a great interest in psychology and anthropology, but that is not always what people mean by 'science'!

Thank you. Where my mothers are from, you take the first surname of both parents, and give them to the child, so I have one from both of them. It is more equal, I feel like, since I am both of theirs.

Your mutation accesses the astral plane? This is fascinating. It has been difficult, scientifically speaking, to discover if such a thing even exists. So to have you, who's very mutation deals with it, would seem to suggest that it does, in fact, exist, is extraordinary.

This is thrilling. I felt that, scientifically, this school would be very stimulating and I am ecstatic to see it proven so soon. I would be interested in speaking about this further, and possibly study it, with your permission.

And to answer your question, my overarching interest is in chemistry, and the way that it extends into the other natural sciences. I am, however, generally interested in all scientific fields, as they all interact together and, ultimately, build the world. I find it difficult to place limits on my personal studies.

I actually very much want to learn more about the astral plane from a more scientific point of view. It's a bit difficult since we only know of four mutants with astral powers and one of them is me. My friend Paul also has astral vision, but unfortunately neither of us know very much about science! You would be the perfect person to help us, I suspect.

I absolutely agree about how hard it is to sort of stop yourself from wanting to learn more and more all the time. I want to take so many electives but I can't possibly take them all! I'm devoted to my little Latin class that's been working hard for the last three years, so I couldn't possibly leave them.

In a sense. It doesn't look different, so much as more, and when you see it, you...understand. It's hard to explain. But it is very beautiful. It's my favorite thing in the world.

(So to speak. I have not encountered the world in it's entirety, nor am I likely to, so I cannot say this with any degree of certainty. It would be better to say that it is my favorite thing in my world.)

I'm sorry, I worded myself badly. I meant that they must seem different from how they usually are. The best way to get to know something is to see what it is made from, after all.

It is. I often regret that I cannot show it to others, or see myself, at least not completely.

I am glad to hear it. Seeing things differently is a very important skill to have, in science. Or anywhere, really. Without it, we would stagnate.

I could recommend you some books, if you're interested. And I will actually be contributing to SHIFT shortly, translating some of the science surrounding mutation into layman's terms. It would be beneficial, if you are interested, to have someone who, in your own words, is both interested in science but is not well-versed in it, to see if my points are getting across. Would you be interested?

On a related note, do happen to know if the infirmary stocks over the counter medicines? I am, incidentally, allergic to cats, but I consider that a small inconvenience in the face of scientific study.
